VIDALIA, La. &045; Right now pitching is the least of the worries for Cathedral Green Wave.

And returning ace Chris Norris has yet to throw a pitch.

Give props to the others around him, like right-hander Brent Tosspon, who mixed up his speeds enough to keep Caldwell off balance for a 9-1 Cathedral win Friday in the opening round of the Vidalia tournament.

&uot;Chris Norris hasn’t pitched yet,&uot; Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. &uot;We’re in good shape now, but it’ll make us that much stronger when he comes back. For us to be 3-1 right now is pretty good considering the teams we’ve been playing.&uot;

Tosspon, taking his turn in a rotation with Jeremy Davis, Te Riley and Corey Walker, allowed no earned runs and got key outs when the Spartans rallied in the first five innings.

The biggest thing? The Green Wave made just two errors behind Tosspon and got timely hits at the plate to bring runners home.

The Green Wave took advantage of five Caldwell errors to take an early lead before jumping on starter Curt Dunn in the fourth inning to blow it open.

The game was called in the bottom of the sixth with no outs after the Green Wave scored three runs and loaded the bases.

&uot;We haven’t been on the field much,&uot; Caldwell head coach Buster Duplissey said. &uot;We’ve only played three ball games. With all the rain we’ve had we’ve had four practices and three games. We made some costly errors. Right now we need some inning.&uot;

Tosspon allowed four hits and surrendered the one run in the sixth after the Green Wave built up a 6-0 lead. Dolph Darden reached on an error and scored an another error as the Spartans put runners in scoring position with no outs.

Tosspon then struck out Jordi Duchesne looking, got Dylan May to fly out to center and struck out leadoff hitter Sam Bass to end the inning.

&uot;I was hitting my spots real well,&uot; Tosspon said. &uot;I started getting my curveball over the plate a little bit. I went with the fastball a little more.&uot;

The two errors were practically welcomed after the Green Wave committed 10 Monday night in the second game of the McComb tournament.

With the defense behind him, Tosspon cruised. In the second and fourth innings the Spartans made a threat, but Tosspon got the outs to get out of the inning.

&uot;I was pleased with Brent,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;He had good control of his fastball. His curveball was getting up, but later in the game he was getting it back down. That was good to see. We need to start playing better defense whoever our pitcher is. That’s my biggest concern right now.&uot;

Cathedral got a big shot from Davis in the fourth to finally get to Dunn on the mound. With two outs Norris reached on an infield single and Garrett Jones on an error before Davis lauched a three-run homer for a 6-0 lead.

&uot;He got a little tired and started missing his spots,&uot; Duplissey said of Dunn. &uot;They started hitting him pretty good. Other than that one inning, he did a great job. They do a good job of hitting the fastball and the curveball and do a good job of hitting to all fields.&uot;

Davis came back in the sixth with a double that moved Jones to third base after he got Norris home when the third baseman misplayed his grounder for a 7-1 lead. Te Riley then singled home Jones and Davis for the 9-1 lead.

&uot;Jeremy looks like he’s getting back on track,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;He was getting out in front of the ball too much. He had a pulled muscle in his back, and he got in a habit of trying to compensate for that.&uot;
