WAYNESBORO &045; The Natchez High Bulldogs finally got their bats hot at just the right time as they scored 11 runs in the final two innings to rally for a 14-6 win over Wayne County Friday.

And just when it seemed very little could go right for the Bulldogs, they pounded out 17 hits and committed just two errors in picking up their first win of the season to go to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in District 5-5A play.

&uot;We were hitting the ball, but we weren’t getting the necessary hits,&uot; Natchez head coach Charlie Williams said. &uot;We got it going in the last inning.&uot;

Natchez sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs off Wayne County losing pitcher Justin Solomon to put the game away.

Natchez led Wayne County 3-2 after three innings of play, only to see the War Eagles rally to take a 7-3 lead going into the sixth inning.

Bulldogs starting pitcher Matthew Henderson, who struck out two and walked two in 4 2/3 innings, was relieved by Kossum, who shut the door on Wayne County.

&uot;He (Kossum) faced just one batter (in the bottom of the fifth), and he hit into a double play,&uot; Williams said. &uot;We turned two double plays. The defense is playing a lot better.&uot;

Kossum allowed just one hit while striking out five in picking up the win for Natchez.

Natchez took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning by rallying for four runs to take a 7-6 lead.

&uot;We’re really hitting the ball much better right now,&uot; Williams said. &uot;I think we had more hits tonight than we had the first five games combined.&uot;
