GREENVILLE &045; No inspiring words had to be uttered to motivate Cathedral as Game 1 of the best-of-three series with St. Joseph went into extra frames Wednesday night.

The Green Wave did all the rallying they needed when Garrett Jones turned the inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to retire St. Joe and its most dangerous hitter Adam

Palafini.

Palafini, who came into the playoffs hitting a blistering .597 this season, was held hitless, as Cathedral recorded six eighth-inning runs for the 10-4 victory.

&uot;We got a man on base early and put some pressure on (St. Joseph) to try and make plays and they could not,&uot; said first-year Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley. &uot;We really swung the bats well tonight.&uot;

The first-round series moves back to Natchez and Chester Willis Field for Game 2 at 6 p.m. today.

The Green Wave got 10 hits overall, three of which came from pitcher Te Riley, who went the full eight innings and struck out five batters, while walking one.

&uot;Te had a tremendous night. I was pleased with his performance at the plate and eight strong innings,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We turned three double plays, which were all crucial behind him. He had a lot of confidence, but it’s always good to see your defense play well.&uot;

After leadoff man Preston Hicks walked to start the eighth, Cathedral saw its next two men retired. But the tide turned for the Wave when Michael Blain was hit by a pitch and Jones walked.

The next four batters knocked in runs, including Chris Norris’ 2-run double, which followed a RBI-single for Riley &045; his fourth of the game.

&uot;We talked after the game that the rally began with two outs in the inning,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We’re hoping that will carry over to the early innings in today’s game. We weren’t able to score runs early (in Wednesday’s game), but we fought hard and hung around.&uot;

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third, again with two outs, Blain reached base on another HBP and then watched Jones and Jeremy Davis walk to load the bases.

Riley came through with his first hit a of the ball game, a single that plated two runners and tied the game.

Hicks knocked in Wyler Murray, who was another hit-by-pitch victim, in the sixth with a double for a momentary lead. The Green Wave again took the lead briefly in the top of the seventh when Riley singled home Jones, who reached base on a walk.
