NATCHEZ &045; The District 2-AAA regular season is over, and all Adams County Christian School can do is wait.

And hope.

A disappointing day Thursday hurt the Rebels’ playoff chances significantly as they lost both games of a doubleheader at home to Jackson Prep. Now the Rebels are down to their season finale Thursday at Riverfield, while the rest of the district finishes their season to figure out seedings for the South State tournament.

Chances are slim for the 8-10 Rebels, and they’ll need Copiah to sweep Central Private (8-7) to have any life. Parklane and Prep are both 10-5, and Hillcrest sits 14-1 and in first place.

&uot;Central Private has to win one of their three against Copiah,&uot; ACCS head coach Gill Morris said. &uot;I really don’t know. If Central Private wins one, that would hurt us right there. Even if Copiah swept Central Private, Central Private beat us in our series. There’s probably a mathematical way &045; and you never want to give up hope until it’s over &045; but it would be awfully difficult for us to get in.&uot;

The losses Friday night &045; along with the loss to Lamar at home the week prior &045; hampered the Rebels’ chances at making the cut for South State. Tuesday’s win at Jackson Prep set the stage for what was a big showdown for the two teams.

The Rebels got four home runs from Glenn Williams in the first game, but the Patriots took both games &045; 17-12 and 10-8 &045; to secure their spot in the playoffs.

&uot;We got seven homers in the first game, but there weren’t a whole lot of singles around them to get people on,&uot; Morris said. &uot;We made six errors the first game and five the second and couldn’t get pitches when we needed to. I don’t know. Our defense &045; things got tight, and we’d give up a walk or an error.

&uot;They run the bases as good as Hillcrest or the others. They would put a runner on, and it seemed like everybody they put on came around to score.&uot;

But even if the Copiah doesn’t pull the sweep this week, Morris and the Rebels won’t consider the season a disappointment. Even though they didn’t get in the postseason, the Rebels are plenty young &045; just one senior, Caleb Walker &045; with a crop of freshmen and sophomores that got significant playing time this season.

&uot;That was one of our goals &045; to get in position to make the playoffs,&uot; Morris said. &uot;It didn’t work out. I have mixed emotions right now, but I’m sure as the days go by I’ll be pleased. A lot of kids got playing time, and that experience will pay off. There were sophomores that played on the B team last year. That’s going to help us down the road and for years to come.&uot;

WHAT A SURPRISE &045; The Trinity Saints rolled through the District 7-1A tournament last week before falling in the championship game to get back into the playoffs.

The Saints will open up the playoffs Tuesday against Riverdale in a best-of-three series with Game 1 set for 3:30 p.m. in Natchez. The series marks a huge turnaround for the Saints, who got into the tournament as the fourth-place team and beat Huntington and Pine Hills to get to the championship.

There’s improvements all around, but the bottom of the lineup came up big Saturday.

&uot;They’ve made drastic improvements,&uot; Trinity head coach Jeremy Loy said. &uot;They’re helping us right now. I think we have a solid top of the order, but I think now we have a solid order one through nine.&uot;

MORE D…JEUR VU &045; The road to the South State championship took a similar turn this week for the Cathedral Green Wave. This week it will meet up with Mize, the team it faced in the first round of last year’s playoffs.

Last season the Wave disposed of Mize in two games just as it did St. Joe of Greenville this week.

But enough about last year. Cathedral hopes the wins over St. Joe set the tone for the playoffs.

&uot;It’s good to beat them in two games to get ready for Mize,&uot; outfielder Jeremy Davis said. &uot;Their only losses have come to us, but it was big also to not have to go up there again.&uot;

CHANGE IN SCHEDULE &045; With school being out today, Vidalia’s game originally scheduled for today against Rayville has been moved to Tuesday, head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said.
