GULFPORT &045; Natchez High’s girls track team won the Class 5A South State title while the boys finished second Saturday at Gulfport.

Cathedral’s girls were fifth and boys seventh in the 1A meet, but all four squads will send a host of athletes to Saturday’s MHSAA state meet in Jackson.

The Lady Bulldogs got another hat trick from Janice Davis, who is heading into her final meet of her storied high school career Saturday. She won the 100 in 11.32 seconds, the 200 in 24.11 seconds and the 400 in 55.74 seconds.

Tanieka Hill won the 100 hurdles in 14.50 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 45.30 seconds.

The relay teams took a sweep of firsts as well with the 400 relay team of Candace Frye, Hill, Lexi Washington and Taji Dorsey in 48.95 seconds, the 800 relay team of Davis, Dorsey, Ke’Airra Jones and Hill in 1:42.42 and the mile relay of Jones, Hill, Washington and Dorsey in 4:00.

Other qualifying for the state meet were Jones in second in the 400 in 59.25 seconds, Oliver in third in the 800 in 2:34.39, Dorsey in second in the 200 in 24.23 seconds, Dorsey third in the long jump at 17-5, Washington in fourth in the long at 17-0, Jones in second in the high jump at 5-2, Washington in fourth in the high at 4-10, Dorsey in third in the triple at 35-9 and Washington in fourth in the triple at 34-7.

On the boys’ side, Kendrick Gibbons won the 110 hurdles in 13.56 seconds, the long jump at 23-10 and was second in the triple jump at 46-8.

Richard Blanton won the 100 in 10.72 seconds and was second in the 200 in 21.91 seconds. Karlecio Richardson won the 300 hurdles in 38.36 seconds.

The relay teams also took a sweep of firsts with the 800 team of Travis Washington, Darryl Bassett, Gibbons and Blanton in 1:28.83, the 400 team of Darius Edwards, Richardson, Gibbons and Blanton in 42.23 seconds and the mile relay of Edwards, Richardson, Gibbons and Adrian Gaylor in 3:24.

Others qualifying were Richardson in third in the 110 hurdles in 14.96 seconds and Chris Tenner in fourth in the 1,600 in 4:59.

Cathedral

The Wave finished with 29 points with Thomastown winning it with 124. Claire Kenda won the 3,200 in 15:01, Jessie Merritt was third in the 1,600 in 7:29, Laura Huffines was third in the 400 in 1:08.6 and Haley Whittington was third in the long jump at 15-0.

The 400 relay team of Huffines, Whittington, Christina Brumfield and Megan Whittington was third in 58.5 seconds, the 800 relay team of Huffines, Haley Whittington, Brumfield and Kate Ellard was third in 2:00.8 and the 1,600 relay of Haley Whittington, Megan Whittington, Brumfield and Merritt was fourth in 5:09.

The boys’ team was fifth with 44 points with Thomastown winning with 133.

Curtis Maier was fourth in the 3,200 in 12:34, Ja’Mel Jackson was second in the discus at 124-2 3/4, Lucas Naff was third in the discus at 110-1 1/2 and Patrick Vogt was third in the pole vault at 10-6.
