NATCHEZ — A U.S. Coast Guard official said an oil spill in the Mississippi River believed to be caused by a Natchez oil company’s compromised storage tank should be cleaned up today.

Lt. Commander Quincy Davis of the Marine Safety Unit in Baton Rouge said 100 barrels, or 4,200 gallons, of oil leaked into Clark Creek in Wilkinson County and made its way to the river, where it formed a miles-long sheen Wednesday. Davis said Coast Guard officials did not see the sheen during a flyover Thursday morning.

The Coast Guard, Davis said, has not found any environmental damage so far in its assessments of the spill.

Natchez-based El Toro Production Co., Davis said, assumed responsibility for the spill. Davis said the integrity of of a storage tank was somehow compromised.

“We’re not sure if it’s the lines or the actual tank itself, that is still being investigated,” he said.

A representative from El Toro Production Co. who declined to give his name said the leak in the tank may have been caused by recent storm damage or from hogs that have been rooting up tank lines.

The representative said the storage tank area is located approximately 30 miles south of Natchez in Wilkinson County.

No river traffic was shut down because of the spill. Davis said containing and assessing the spill was a team effort by the Coast Guard, local law enforcement in Point Coupee and West Feliciana parishes, Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Environment Quality and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Davis said El Toro Production Co. could face fines or penalties, but he said that will be determined once the Vicksburg Marine Safety Detachment completes its investigation.

Coast Guard officials said two companies have been hired to clean up the spill, and Davis said clean-up should be finished today.
