NATCHEZ &045; Maybe that bye isn’t what Trinity’s Sam Kirby needed after all.

After Glenbrook School’s Tomlin Wilson went three sets to defeat Huntington’s Chad Kenney 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, Wilson gave Kirby all he could handle in a quarterfinal No. 1 boys’ singles match at the MPSA Class A South State championships at Duncan Park Tuesday.

Kirby held on to win the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6, only to watch Wilson bounce back by taking the second set 6-4. In what was a match of endurance Kirby had enough left in the tank in the third and final set to pull away with the match 6-2.

Kirby is slated to play again at Duncan today at 9 a.m. against the No. 1 seeded Tyler Metzger from River Oaks.

Huntington’s No. 1 doubles’ pair of Sarah Ashmore and Katie Cole got a bye into the second round and moved past Franklin Academy 6-2, 6-2 to

face Deer Creek’s duo of Allison Clifford and Claire Underwood today at 9 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal.

A possible all Miss-Lou final exists for the No. 1 girls’ doubles if Ashmore and Cole can advance and hope Wilkinson County Christian Academy’s Caroline Kee and Crystal Whitaker can defeat the No. 1-seeded Humphreys’ pair of Crystal Champion and Hattie Lloyd, also at Trinity at 9 a.m.

Kee and Whitaker were winners over River Oaks’ Sarah Mintz and Morgan Sartor Tuesday. After dropping the first set 1-6, WCCA came back to take the final two 6-1, 6-4.

In other local action today Trinity’s No. 2 boys’ doubles team of Everette Paradise and Rob Greer play Guy Cockran and Jerome Eskin from Franklin Academy at 10:30 a.m. at Duncan Park. Greer and Paradise knocked off Hunter and Hayden Moffett from Huntington 7-6, 6-2, before moving past Deer Creek’s Selby Labarre and Leyton Proctor 6-4, 6-3.

The No. 1-ranked mixed doubles’ team of Whitney Bradford and Douglas Miller from Huntington are set to play in the semifinals today at 10:30 a.m. at Duncan after surviving a scare against Glenbrook’s Amber Botzang and Chase Perot 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
