JACKSON &045; Cathedral’s three doubles tennis teams dropped their matches Tuesday at the Class 1A state tournament at Bridges Tennis Complex in Jackson.
The Green Wave’s boys’ doubles team of Turner Smith and Clay Pennington lost to St. Aloysius’ Cass Dodgen and Michael Engle, 2-6, 2-6. The girls’ doubles team of Kate Reid and Stacy Verucchi lost to St. Al’s Bonnie Neil and Josey Hood, 2-6, 3-6.
St. Joseph of Greenville’s mixed doubles team of Jessica Mouzz and Charles Casio held off Cathedral’s team of Will Carter and Kate Ellard, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6.
&uot;We had a really good season,&uot; CHS coach Cloyce Hinton said. &uot;The kids had a really good year. We’re only losing one person (Verucchi) off the whole team, and Will Carter is a 10th-grader and Kate Ellard a ninth-grader. I’m looking for good things out of them for the next couple of years.&uot;
The mixed doubles’ match was the tightest one of the day as Carter and Ellard stormed back in the second set to even things out. In the third set the pair got up 5-4 before the St. Joe team battled to tie it up.
&uot;We had Will serving, and they blocked him,&uot; Hinton said. &uot;Then we came back, and they went up 6-5. Kate scored, and then we each scored to take us to the tie-breaker, and it was back and forth on the tie-breaker. It was a good match to watch, and we had our chances of winning it.&uot;
