WOODVILLE &045; At its monthly meeting on Wednesday, the Wilkinson County School Board awarded hunting leases for two sections of school land to the high bidders.

The board opened six bids on the 689-acre Section 15, T3N, R1W, located along Mississippi Route 563 east of the Buffalo community.

Leonard Allred was awarded the lease with an offer of $10.01 per acre.

The second parcel of land leased was Section 18, T2N, R1E, a 641-acre tract on Macedonia Road north of Centreville.

Chandler Sanders and John C. Floyd won the lease from among seven bidders with their high bid of $22.51 per acre.

The one-year leases will generate a total of $21,273 in revenue for the school district.

The board also voted to approve the district’s Consolidated Federal Program Application for the fiscal year 2004.

The yearly entitlement programs are projected to furnish the district with over $1.1 million, including $954,290 of Title I monies for teacher salaries and equipment purchases. In other action, the board:

4Agreed to include computer hardware classes in the district’s high school curriculum for juniors and seniors this fall through the Explornet program.

Funded with a grant, Explornet is part of Governor Musgrove’s initiative to put computers in all classrooms.

4Hired the McComb accounting firm of Dribbens and Associates to perform the district’s audits for the next two years at a cost of $11,000 per year.

4Renamed William Winans Attendance Center in Centreville as William Winans Middle School.

The newly-constructed middle school will open Aug. 11 for approximately 380 students in grades six, seven and eight.

4Heard a report on the district’s Summer Feeding Program, which will begin June 16 and end July 14.
