Sixth Circuit sentences 16 defendants during term of court in Wilkinson

LIBERTY &045; Sixth Circuit Judge Forrest A. Johnson recently sentenced 16 criminal defendants who all entered guilty pleas during the current term of court, according to documents filed in the Amite County Circuit Clerk’s office as of Wednesday.

A synopsis of the court’s action:

Earl Brent Calloway pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance, methamphetamine (more than 0.1 grams but less than 2.0 grams). Calloway was sentenced to a term of eight years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections and fined $15,000.

Gregory Hughes pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary of a dwelling house.

Hughes was sentenced to a term of 10 years in the MDOC and fined $2,000.

The court retained jurisdiction of this case for up to one year for placement in the Inmate Regimented Disciplinary program. Upon successful completion of RID, Hughes will be returned to Amite County to await further review and order of the court.

Cedrick Hackett pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary of a dwelling house.

Hackett was sentenced to 10 years in the MDOC and fined $2,000.The court retained jurisdiction of this case for up to one year for placement in the Inmate Regimented Disciplinary program.

Upon successful completion of RID, Hackett will be returned to Amite County to await further review and order of the court.

Willie Ray Anderson pleaded guilty to a charge of felony DUI (third offense).

Anderson was sentenced to a term of five years in the MDOC. After serving one year, the balance of four years will be suspended, and Anderson will be placed on four years of post-release supervision.

Jerry Dalt Newsom pleaded guilty to separate charges of manufacture of a schedule II controlled substance, methamphetamine, and jail escape. Newsom was sentenced to 15 years in the MDOC on the methamphetamine charge.

After serving 10 years, the balance of five years will be suspended, and Newsom will be placed on five years of post-release supervision. Newsom was also sentenced to serve a consecutive term of one year in the MDOC on the jail escape charge.

Crystal Slavin pleaded guilty to a charge of manufacture of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance, methamphetamine. Slavin was sentenced to a term of 10 years in the MDOC and fined $3,000. The court retained jurisdiction of this case for up to one year for placement in the Inmate Regimented Disciplinary program. Upon successful completion of RID, Slavin will be returned to Amite County to await further review and order of the court.

Donald Shropshire pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a deadly weapon, a butcher knife, by a convicted felon (non-habitual). Shropshire was sentenced to a term of three years in the MDOC with credit for time served and fined $500. The remaining balance of the term was suspended, and Shropshire was placed on post-release supervision for two years.

David Anders Jr. pleaded guilty to charges of uttering a forgery (three counts). Anders was sentenced to concurrent terms of five years in the MDOC on each count and ordered to pay $163 restitution. The court retained jurisdiction of this case for up to one year for placement in the Inmate Regimented Disciplinary program.

Upon successful completion of RID, Anders will be returned to Amite County to await further review and order of the court.

Donald Ray Fields pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated assault.

Fields was sentenced to a term of five years in the MDOC.

The sentence was suspended, and Fields was placed on probation for five years.

Ellis Ray Jackson pleaded guilty to felony DUI (third offense).

Jackson was sentenced to a term of five years in the MDOC and fined $2,000.

The court suspended the fine and ordered that Jackson be placed in the Intensive Supervision Program in the MDOC for one year.

Upon successful completion of ISP, the balance of four years will be suspended, and Jackson will be placed on post-release supervision for four years.

Leterrel D. Gordon pleaded guilty to receiving or possession of stolen property valued in excess of $250.

Gordon was sentenced to five years in the MDOC and fined $1,000. The term was suspended, and Gordon was placed on probation for five years.

Melissa Ann Walker Martin pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a schedule II controlled substance, methamphetamine (less than 0.1 gram).

Martin was sentenced to a term of four years in the MDOC and fined $1,000.

The term was suspended, and Martin was placed on probation for five years.

Carl Weathersby pleaded guilty to a charge of felony DUI (third offense).

Weathersby was sentenced to five years in the MDOC and fined $2,000. The court suspended the fine and ordered that Weathersby be placed in the Intensive Supervision Program in the MDOC for one year.

Upon successful completion of ISP, the balance of four years will be suspended, and Weathersby will be placed on post- release supervision for four years.

Recko Daniel McElveen pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of simple assault.

McElveen was sentenced to a term of six months in the Amite County Jail and fined $500.

The term was suspended, and McElveen was placed on misdemeanor probation for five years.

Joseph L. Norwood pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of simple assault.

Norwood was sentenced to a term of six months in the Amite County Jail and ordered to pay restitution of $319.23.

The term was suspended, and Norwood was placed on misdemeanor probation for five years.

Julie Slavin pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of accessory after the fact of jail escape.

Slaven was sentenced to a term of one year in the Amite County Jail with credit for time served.

The balance of the term was suspended, and Slavin was placed on misdemeanor probation for five years.
