KENNER — A Ferriday man ended a four-hour standoff with Louisiana State Police on Interstate 10 Sunday evening by firing his weapon in the air while jumping into Lake Pontchartrain.

Traffic was shut down in both directions of the interstate between Kenner and LaPlace for more than four hours as authorities negotiated with Vincent Hollins, 37, of Ferriday, said Troop B Public Information Officer Melissa Matey.

The incident began at approximately 6 p.m., when a state trooper saw Hollins’ vehicle pulled over to the right shoulder of the westbound side of the interstate near mile marker 213. The vehicle had its hazard lights on, and Hollins was out of the vehicle, Matey said.

“The trooper pulled over to assist the driver, started walking toward the driver and noticed (Hollins) was holding a gun pointed toward to the ground,” Matey said. “That’s when traffic was shut down and negotiations started.”

After several hours of attempted negotiations, the standoff ended at approximately 10 p.m., when Hollins jumped off the elevated roadway into the water, Matey said.

“As (Hollins) was jumping off the bridge, a shot was fired from his weapon,” Matey said.

Three St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office boats and Wildlife and Fisheries agents were already on the scene and rescued Hollins shortly after he jumped, Matey said.

Hollins was not injured, but was transported to Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner, where he remained Monday evening.

Upon his release from the medical center, Hollins will be transferred to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, where he will be charged with illegal carrying and discharging of weapons and aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce, Matey said.

“Our goal in these types of situation is to resolve everything peacefully with no one being hurt,” Matey said. “That’s how this ended Sunday night.”

State troopers reopened the interstate at approximately 11 p.m.
