MAGEE &045; The state was set for the Natchez Rebel League All-Stars to make another dramatic win Tuesday.

But like an attention-starved actor, Mother Nature instead took center stage.

A downpour halted play in the top of the third as the Rebel League trailed Pascagoula 6-2 in Tuesday’s winners’ bracket final at the Dixie Youth Minor League state tournament in Magee.

The game will continue at 4 p.m. today.

&uot;Center field looks like Lake St. John,&uot; Natchez Minor League commissioner Porky Smith said. &uot;And it’s still raining. Water got under the tarp at home plate, and goldfish could swim in that.&uot;

Pascagoula broke away from a 2-2 tie in the third inning with three runs off Natchez starter Tyler Morrison. The Rebel League started off the inning strong when a grounder back to the mound turned into a double play when Morrison fired to Brandon Sanders at second, who threw Garrett Smith to first.

But Pascagoula got three straight singles and a double from Chris Harding for a two-out rally.

Dustin Russell singled in a run, and Harding’s double scored two for the 5-2 run.

After Natchez went down in order in the second against starter Logan Wall, Pascagoula got a run in the third when Cordaryl Weathersby tagged and scored on a Colin Bray sacrifice fly.

That’s when the rain put a halt to everything.

Natchez scored its two runs in the first inning when Hunter Hatcher’s single came on the heels of a Christopher Perry homer over the right-center field fence to tie it up. Pascagoula scored two in the first to take the lead.

Natchez 13s rained out

HATTIESBURG &045; The Natchez 13-year-old Dixie Boys All-Stars never got a chance to take the field as a downpour halted the Kosciusko-Pascagoula game with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Natchez will try again in its losers’ bracket contest at 5 p.m. today against Laurel, and action will be pushed back a day due to the rainout.

&uot;They had just four outs to go and didn’t finish it,&uot; Natchez head coach William Barnes said. &uot;The home dugout filled up with water. It was pretty rough. It was bad &045; real bad.&uot;

Rain suspended the first game with Kosciusko holding a 10-5 lead with one out remaining before Pascagoula could get its last at-bat.
