New district lines can be confusing

If you vote in Adams County and you are confused about your state senate and state representative districts, do not despair. Indeed, only the student of the 2003 election process is certain about just where the districts begin and end and which candidates will be on his or her ballot.

Adams County includes parts of four different state representative districts and two senate districts.

They are 37 and 38 for the senate race. And for the election of representatives, they are 85, 94, 96 and 97.

Here is an overview to help voters figure out who their candidates are. And also in today’s and Monday’s editions of The Democrat are articles based on interviews of the candidates.

In one senate and two representative districts, the incumbents have no opposition.

If you vote in Senate District 37, Democrat Bob M. Dearing of Natchez is your senator, and he runs unopposed.

If you vote in State Representative District 94, your representative is Democrat Phillip West of Natchez. He, too, runs unopposed.

If you vote in State Representative District 96, your representative is Democrat David L. Green of Gloster, also unopposed.

In Senate District 38, incumbent Democrat Robert L. Johnson III of Natchez will face Democrat Kelvin E. Butler of Magnolia.

In Representative District 85, incumbent Democrat America &uot;Chuck&uot; Middleton of Port Gibson faces Democrats Walter Huston and Arnold E. Clark Jr., both of Fayette.

In Representative District 97, two Democrats, Derrick Dahl and Chad L. Toney, both of Amite County, will face off in the primary; also, Republican candidates Randall C. Love of Summit and Sam Mims of McComb will vie for the nomination in that primary.

State Representative District 96, represented by David Green, includes three precincts in Adams County: By Pass Fire, By Pass Fire Sub A and Beau Pre Sub A.

State

Representative District 97, which includes Republican and Democratic primaries in the Tuesday election, includes Courthouse, Bellemont, Duncan Park Sub A, Beau Pre, Kingston and Palestine Sub A precincts.

Representative District 85 includes Bellemont Sub A, Liberty Park, Kingston Sub A, Palestine and Washington Sub A precincts.

Representative District 94 includes Bellemont Sub B, Duncan Park, Concord, Maryland Heights, NPS Multipurpose, all precincts in Supervisor District 4 and Foster’s Mound, Oakland, Airport and Washington precincts.
