Cathedral’s Lady Wave softball team ran into a buzzsaw of a Lawrence County team Thursday in Monticello as it dropped a 10-0 decision in six innings. The Class 4A Lady Cougars put four hits over the fence and didn’t let many hard-hit balls fall in to keep the Lady Wave off the scoreboard.

Cathedral (0-2) lost its second game after opening the season with a 12-8 loss to Class 5A Natchez High.

&uot;I would compare it to Cathedral having to play Madison Central in football,&uot; CHS head coach Cloyce Hinton said. &uot;We were just out-manned and out-gunned. In the two years I’ve been here, this was the best high school girls’ slow-pitch softball team I’ve seen, especially this early in the year. He (LC coach) said they already had three girls who have committed to play major college fast-pitch softball next year.&uot;

The Lady Cougars jumped on Cathedral quick with four runs in the first inning off Lady Wave pitcher Brandi McGraw. One batter came up and hit a three-run homer, and another launced a solo homer for the lead.

The Lady Cougars got two runs on a homer in the fourth for a 6-0 lead, four runs in the fifth and a two runs off a homer in the sixth for the 10-0 lead to end the game as per the 10-run rule.

&uot;It was a learning experience for us,&uot; Hinton said. &uot;The girls hung in there. I was far from being disappointed in the effort they gave. It was just a good, solid team we played tonight.&uot;

The Lady Wave finished the game with four hits, but a number of line drives and other shots that would have fallen on other teams didn’t against Lawrence County. In the sixth Cathedral left the bases loaded, and earlier they left two on with a runner getting thrown out at third base from the outfield.

&uot;We just didn’t hit the ball at all,&uot; Hinton said. &uot;We played decent defense. We hit the ball hard, but it was right at somebody every time.&uot;

Natchez-South Pike scratched

NATCHEZ &045; Thursday’s scheduled game between the South Pike and the Natchez High was cancelled since school officials are the Magnolia school have been unable to fill the position of head coach since Marcus Flippin resigned, NHS head coach Leigh Anne Mason said.

No make-up date has been announced.

Natchez High’s next game will be against Cathedral at 5 p.m. Thursday.
