It would be funny if it weren’t so true. In what continues to be one long case of irony in the Mississippi justice system, an attorney in Fayette has filed lawsuits against other lawyers, alleging they scammed asbestos and diet drug victims out of millions of dollars.

At least two of the lawsuits have been thrown out of court, prompting the trial lawyers accused &045;&045; the same folks who often seek huge damage awards from doctors and drug companies and other businesses in places like Fayette &045;&045; to cry foul.

One attorney even called the action &uot;baseless,&uot; a charge often leveled at their own lawsuits.

Confused yet by all the lawyers in the situation?

The lawsuits against the attorneys are baseless and have rightfully been thrown out, but we can’t help but wonder if perhaps these trial lawyers are beginning to see the others side in the tort reform debate.

Perhaps they now know what it feels like to be Bankston Drug Store, the Fayette pharmacy hauled into court so many times by alleged diet drug victims and their attorneys that it practically went bankrupt.

These kinds of &uot;baseless&uot; lawsuits are the reason why we need more tort reform in Mississippi. Last year we saw the state Legislature finally pass meaningful medical malpractice reform for physicians; now we need to see civil justice reform. It can help make our state more business friendly &045;&045; and just might help save the Bankston Drug Stores of the state.
