FERRIDAY — A Ferriday man died early Sunday after crashing his ATV into a large, brick mailbox on Louisiana 568.

Matthew Louis Evans, 24, was driving east on the highway when he lost control, a Louisiana State Police press release said.

Troopers arrived on the scene at 5:50 a.m.

Evans was not wearing a helmet and was ejected. He was transported to Riverland Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests are pending, and the crash is still under investigation.

State police said it not only dangerous but illegal to operate off-road vehicles on public roadways.
