If the third and fourth graders at Ridgecrest School this spring are any indication, this community has a bright future ahead.

Students in those two grades scored nearly off the charts on their state standardized tests, making us all proud.

In fourth-grade math, 100 percent of the students hit the mark. In third-grade math, 91 percent of students scored at the top.

The high scores made us briefly wonder to ourselves, “Maybe closing Ridgecrest is the wrong move?”

Probably not, but the school’s performance on the tests certainly gives pause.

The school is closing to make way for a magnet school focused on technology, math and science. We expect to see more 100 and 91 scores once those doors open in the fall.

Overall, the parish schools continue to make steady — though sometimes slow — improvement on their test scores.

As a whole, the district improved 1 percentage point this year over their performance last year.

The district sits just 4 percentage points behind the state’s average score.

Congratulations to the students, teachers, parents and administrators who have worked hard to put the district on the right path.

We are expecting continued greatness next year.
