WOODVILLE &045; When you’re 9-1 and beating someone by almost 30 points, it’s always dangerous to feel too good about yourself.
The Adams Christian Rebels maintained their fast start to the season Saturday with a 65-37 dumping of Centreville at the WCCA New Year’s Shootout, but it’s the bigger obstacles ahead they’re quickly turning their attention to.
For starters, Tuesday’s game at Central Private will be their toughest opponent in weeks. But it also kicks off a grueling week that also includes a game against defending Overall champ Hillcrest Christian.
So there may be reason to be cautiously optimistic this weekend.
&uot;We’ll be OK before the year is out,&uot; ACCS head coach John Gray said. &uot;We’ll have to see a real good team to get a full workout as a team. Right now we have a two-on-two type of offense going, and we’re not focused for four quarters. I’m real pleased. After taking the holidays off and practicing only two times, they really impressed me.&uot;
If there’s anything going strong right now for the Rebels, it’s their perimeter defense with Glenn Williams, Dustin Case and Ray Simpson leading the way. It gave the Tigers problems from the start as the Rebels opened the game with a 12-0 lead before CA got on the board with a Brandon Patin 3-pointer six minutes in.
Then with under two minutes left in the half Joey Norris put in two free throws to put the lead at a commanding 29-8.
&uot;I was real pleased with how they started,&uot; Gray said. &uot;We have four real quick, small guards. They’re real quick. I’d love to play use more than that, though, but the people we play are so big we’d have a hard time playing more than two at a time.&uot;
The Tigers trimmed the lead some at the start of the third quarter to 33-16 on a bucket from Daniel Hall, but the Rebels got two free throws from Luke Ogden to start a 11-2 run.
Williams scored off a steal with 2:12 left to finish the run and put the AC lead at 42-16.
Williams and Ogden led the Rebels in scoring with 12 apiece. Patin led the Tigers with 15.

After starting the season with no wins in 11 games, Huntington head coach Brandon Gousset had to do something he perhaps did not want to do.
But desparate times call for desparate measures, and Gousset did what he thought was necessary &045; he shook up the Hounds’ starting lineup, and it worked as they finally notched their first win of the season over Oak Forest.
Gousset with a starting lineup of Chad Kinney and Mike Ferguson &045; two guys who have started every game this season &045; along with Hunter Norwood, Jacob Bonnett and Hayden Moffett.
&uot;Norwood and Bonnett are real fast. Quick feet and quick hands,&uot; Gousset said. &uot;They got a lot of steals. I had a defensive-oriented crew to start. We probably had our best free-throw shooting game of the season. We were 8 for 11. We have been at about 35 percent.&uot;
Oak Forest, which was also looking for its first win of the season, stayed with Huntington throughout the game. But Huntington’s press defense, which Gousset noted was another key factor, kept Oak Forest at bay.

Huntington Lady Hounds head coach Penny Moak was unsure whether Whitney Bradford was going to play Friday morning against Oak Forest in the WCCA New Year’s Shoot Out.
But just four days after having her wisdom teeth taken out, Bradford played her best game of the season, scoring 21 points and almost single-handedly lifting Huntington to victory.
And the Lady Hounds (9-7) got their revenge on an Lady Yellow Jackets team that defeated them by 29 points at the season-starting ACCS Girls Tip-Off Classic.
&uot;This was a big win,&uot; Moak said. &uot;Bradford did a great job. I didn’t think she was going to play.&uot;
Huntington took an 11-6 lead after one quarter of play, but Oak Forest’s offense showed some life in the second quarter as the Lady Yellow Jackets outscored the Lady Hounds 19-7 to take a 25-18 halftime lead.
But Huntington answered with a rally of its own in the second half, outscoring Oak Forest 8-3 in the third quarter and 10-4 in the fourth quarter.

Erin Ashleigh scored as many points by herself as the Lady Eagles did as a team as she finished with 23 points as the Lady Rams cruised to an easy 25-point win Friday night.
WCCA (3-6) jumped out to an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Ben’s Ford cut into the lead, but only by one point to 13 at the half.
