NATCHEZ — Gayle Grant will be leaving the church dress and shoes in the closet today.
She’ll still be in the congregation at Liberty Worship Center in Jonesville, but will be showing her team pride in the black and gold of the New Orleans Saints.
“Our associate pastor said Sunday is all Saints day and for us to come to church wearing our Saints gear,” the Jonesville resident said. “We are going to worship and support the Saints.”
Grant was shopping for a new Saints shirt at Hometown Sports in Vidalia for her mother who also attends Liberty Worship Center.
“She has a Saints shirts already but it says ‘Who Dat,’ Grant said. “She wants one that just says ‘Saints’ for church.”
After church, Grant’s entire family will congregate at her sister’s house for a Super Bowl party. She said the family normally tries to get together to watch the game, but that no one will miss this year’s party.
“This year is special,” she said. “We’ve always pulled for the Saints, through all the bad years, so to finally get to the Super Bowl is a big deal.”
Grant won’t be alone in the Miss-Lou sporting her black and gold today. At SportsCenter in Natchez, Stephanie McCaa of Natchez was picking up a Saints T-shirt to wear at her family Super Bowl Party.
McCaa has already gotten T-shirts for her daughters Madelyn, 4, and Lauren, 3, and a Saints cheerleading outfit for 16-month-old Kaydence.
The only hold-out in the family is husband Anthony who is still going back and forth on his allegiances.
While he is surrounded by Saints fans, Anthony said it is hard to root against Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.
“I’ve pulled for him since he was in college at (the University of Tennessee),” he said.
So it is likely McCaa will be in the minority when Super Bowl XLIV kicks off at 5:25 p.m. today on CBS.
“We will have a big Super Bowl party at my mom and dad’s house,” Stephanie said. “Everyone is going to be in Saints’ gear.”
Everyone is going to be in Saints’ gear at Jim and Katrina Maier’s house too. Katrina was shopping for a Saints shirt to compliment her daughter Alisabeth’s Drew Brees jersey and her husband’s collection of Saints’ memorabilia.
“He has a black jersey and a white jersey, shirts, a hat and we got him a huggie for the game,” Katrina said.
Georgette Brown, of Houston, Texas, will be taking a little bit of Saints’ pride back to Houston when she and her daughter return to Texas with new Saints T-shirts.
“I don’t know if I’m going to stay here another day and watch the game here or leave early enough to get back to Houston to watch it there,” she said. “But I will be in front of a television somewhere when they kick off.”
Brown said she will support the Saints despite living in a town with its own NFL franchise.
“Have you ever seen the Texans play?” she said.
