GREENVILLE &045; What started out as a promising start for the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams turned into a disaster in the first round of the MPSA Class A South State Tournament.

And that spelled the end of the season for a Rams team that was lucky to get this far as they lost to the Humphreys Academy Rebels 56-38 Tuesday night at Greenville Christian School.

The Rams stayed with the Rebels in the first quarter, with the score at the end of the quarter tied at nine.

Then things fell apart for WCCA over the next 16 minutes as the Rams were outscored a combined 31-9 over that span to end any thoughts of continuing their season.

Brad Pritchard led WCCA with 17 points. Will Rowland led Humphreys with a game-high 21 points.

Wingfield 60, Jefferson 56

JACKSON &045; The Class 4A Falcons jumped out to an eight-point halftime lead, then scored enough in the second half to thwart off any rally by the Tigers (12-16) Tuesday night.

Wingfield took a 31-23 halftime lead over Jefferson County. The Tigers tried to rally in the second half, but it was not meant to be.

Joshfer Nichols led Jefferson County with a game-high 22 points. C. Cook (no first name given) led Wingfield with 14 points.

Newellton 63, Block 58

JONESVILLE, La. &045; Jeremy Washington did all he could to help Block get out of last place in District 4-1A, but it would be the visiting Bears who won the game in the fourth quarter.

Washington led Block (10-11, 1-6) and all scorers with 36 points.

The score was tied at 45-45 after three quarters, but Newellton (9-10, 4-2) outscored Block 18-13 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

Cathedral 37, West Lincoln 32

NATCHEZ &045; Having respect for your opponent is one thing; fearing him is another.

The Green Wave knew West Lincoln’s Brooks Smith was a sharpshooter, but that does not mean they were intimidated by him.

Cathedral used a diamond-and-one defense to stifle Smith, who was held to five points, as it got a huge Region 7-1A victory before the Green Wave begin to host the region tournament next week.

&uot;It’s probably been a while since we’ve beaten West Lincoln boys,&uot; Cathedral assistant coach Peter Arnold said. &uot;Confidence-wise, this is a big boost for us. Brooks Smith is a fantastic shooter. Russell Barmer did an incredible job on him for us.&uot;

Franklin 58, Hazlehurst 53

MEADVILLE &045; Zach Thomas continues to be a force inside for the Bulldogs, as the 6-6 post dropped 29 on the Indians to keep Franklin County in a first-place tie in Region 7-3A.

The Bulldogs held leads after every quarter as Johnny Sanders and Darryl Hillard led Hazlehurst with 14 each.
