WOODVILLE &045;&045; Youngsters in a local 4-H shooting sports club will soon have access to an indoor air rifle range, thanks to the efforts of Wilkinson County Extension Service officials and county supervisors.

Supervisors agreed Monday to allow the Extension Service to convert part of a former elementary school building on Second South Street into an indoor range for air rifles. Organized in December, the shooting club is currently training to compete in state 4-H shooting competition in April, Extension Service Director Ann Davis said.

Nationally-renowned shooting instructor and Woodville native Jack Withers has volunteered to coach the young shooters, Davis said. Withers has coached several champions in USA Shooting competition and seen many of his students go on to compete in the Olympic Games. A member of the National Shooting Coaches Development Staff, Withers also teaches other experts how to coach young shooters.

Liability insurance for the shooting club will be provided through Mississippi State University’s Extension Service Program.

&uot; All of the students are already enrolled in a program where they have their insurance,&uot; Davis said.

Supervisors agreed to allow the club to use the building if a certificate of insurance coverage is filed with the Chancery Clerk’s Office.

The board authorized the payment of several invoices from vendors for goods and services billed to District 2 in December. The invoices were each less than $100 and did not require purchase orders, said Purchasing Clerk Consandra Christmas.

The board also agreed to provide the county’s engineering consultants with a map of the county’s new supervisor district lines so that U.S. Census maps can be updated.
