ELECTION UPDATE: Voters filing in, turnout looking up

NATCHEZ — Several polling places are reporting more voters today than they did in the Democratic primary.
Election officials were expecting a low turnout since the May 1 primary only drew 42 percent of the registered voters and only one race is on the ballot today.
“Here, your vote actually counts,” said Bob Mason, who recently moved to Natchez from Los Angeles.
Voters will choose either Larry L. “Butch” Brown or Phillip West as the Democratic candidate who will face Bill Furlow and Bob Buie in a June 5 general election.

“This particular race determines whether Natchez is ready for a change,” said Kimberly Carter, who voted this morning at the National Guard Armory.
She wants to see Natchez become more “family oriented” rather then a retirement community, she said.
Robin Perryman, a voter at the City Council Chambers, had similar concerns.
“I just want the right thing to be done. You know when you have kids, you want the parks to be clean and safe.”
