NATCHEZ — The Cathedral High School baseball and softball teams will have to wait at least one more day before getting their final shot to advance to the MHSAA Class 1A state championship series.

Thunderstorms Saturday forced both teams to postpone their respective matchups with Nanih Waiya High School. The Lady Green Wave were set to host Nanih Waiya for Game 2 of the South State championship series, while the baseball team was supposed to travel to Louisville for Game 3 of South State.

For the softball team, Game 2 will now take place on Monday at 4 p.m. If Cathedral wins that game and ties the series at 1-1, Game 3 will follow at the conclusion of Game 2. Nanih Waiya leads the best-of-three series one game to none after winning Game 1 of the series 10-0 Thursday afternoon.

“It’s pretty muddy. It’s all dirt,” Lady Green Wave head coach Gary Blackwell said. “It’s a possibility that if the sun stayed out all day, we could’ve played.”

Blackwell added that it was a tough call to cancel the games, but one he had to make. He also said Nanih Waiya would have had to leave from Louisville at 9 a.m. to get to Natchez for what would have been a 3 p.m. game.

“It would take a full day of sunshine to get (the field) ready,” Blackwell said.

In anticipation of the rain, Game 3 of the series between the Green Wave baseball team and the Warriors was also moved to Monday.

“Thunderstorms — 100 percent chance of rain from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Louisville,” Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley said.

The third and deciding game between the Green Wave and the Warriors will now take place at 5 p.m. Monday.

“We’re glad we didn’t get halfway up there before we found out about it (being cancelled),” Beesley said. “I would’ve hated to travel three and a half hours and then find out something. It helps with our bus travel. Anytime you don’t have to make that long trip and then get rained out, it’s good.”

Cathedral tied the series at one game apiece after taking Game 2 of the series with a 4-3 win Friday night.
