Hinson hits 3 HRs, drives in 9 in VHS win

VIDALIA, La. &045; Two fastballs got by Brett Hinson to put him behind in the count, so Lakeside head coach Bob Gray thought he finally had the answer.

A fastball.

Made sense &045; the Vidalia infielder had slugged two homers earlier in the game on offspeed pitches and all of a sudden looked a little slow on a couple heaters. So the Warriors threw a fastball out of the zone and then came with another on a 1-2 count, needing just a strike to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

Wrong again.

&uot;That’s the thing about pitch calling,&uot; Gray admitted.

Hinson deposited it over the big blue wall in center for a grand slam, his third bomb of the day and RBIs six through nine as the the junior drove in all but two of the Vikings’ runs in an 11-9 win over the Warriors in a Class 2A bi-district playoff Tuesday.

All three shots went over the blue wall in center &045; a three-run blast in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth.

&uot;Earlier in the year I was hitting right behind him, and coach flip-flopped us in the last two weeks,&uot; said Jeffery Anderson, who hit ahead of Hinson in the No. 5 hole and was on base for each jack. &uot;Brett just went off today. That was crazy. To hit like that and come right back and pitch, that’s nothing but a good job of stepping up.&uot;

It was enough to give the Warriors that sour stomach feeling after they hit the ball well &045; nine runs on 10 hits and three errors to Vidalia’s five. They had the first lead of the game and answered Hinson’s first homer to tie the game up midway through.

They cut the lead to one heading into Vidalia’s half of the sixth when Hinson broke their backs with the grand slam.

&uot;Good God &045; that was so big,&uot; Gray said. &uot;He had a day. He accounted for nine RBIs out of 11. We were down one and had thrown him pitches we could throw him with two different pitchers. We had two strikes on him this time and felt like we could get him, but he sat back on it. He doesn’t have a day like that every day. You’ve got to take your hat off to him &045; he had a great day.&uot;

The granny was the biggest blow to the Warriors, although they tacked on two in the seventh off Hinson &045; on in relief of Mac Ware &045; to cut the final deficit to two. But Lakeside had just cut the lead to 7-6 in the fifth when Josh Todd scored on an error.

In the sixth reliever Chris Ryan got slugger Chris Williams on an infield flyout for the second out of the inning, but he hit Anderson with a pitch to load up the bases for Hinson with two outs.

Ryan gave up the slam, walked Reid Simpson and got pulled.

&uot;He threw it high, and it popped up and carried out,&uot; Hinson said. &uot;The first pitcher (of the game) was throwing curveballs every once in a while, and my first at-bat I struck out on three straight pitches. In my next at-bat the pitcher threw a lot of junk, and that’s what I hit out. I just hit the ball.&uot;

The three homers came off three different pitchers, and it sort of underlined what kind a day the Vikings had at the plate. The Warriors sent three pitchers to the mound, all three significantly different in their pitches.

Hinson’s three-run homer put the Vikings up 5-4 after Anderson doubled in two runs in the first.

&uot;We were disciplined at the plate,&uot; Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. &uot;That’s the key to hitting. We had some guys step up tonight, and it was a good win. Brett hadn’t shown this kind of power, but this time of year you always who rise to the occasion. You’ve got to have it. He did, and Anderson did. Let’s not forget Anderson’s play in center field. You’ve got to have somebody step up.&uot;

The Warriors had players step up early in the game to take a quick lead on Mac Ware. David Anderson doubled in a run in the first before Casey Jones followed with a two-run single for a 3-0 lead.

Marcus Gibson reached base in the second and scored on an error for a 4-2 Lakeside lead.

Then in the top of the seventh the Warriors put the tying run on after scoring three runs. J.W. Haynes scored on an error, Todd singled in two runs and an error on a ball hit by Garrett Vaughn put runners at first and second with two outs.

Hinson then got Marshall Merritt to fly out to left to end the game.
