BROOKHAVEN — The old adage that defense wins championships often proves true, and if Wednesday afternoon was any indication, the ACCS varsity girls have a pretty good shot at a championship.

The Lady Rebels faced Glenbrook in the quarterfinals of the MAIS Class AA South State tournament in Brookhaven, and made quick work of the Lady Apaches, to the tune of a 67-18 blowout.

The most points Glenbrook scored in a quarter were six in the second. The Lady Apaches were regulated to just four points in the other three quarters.

ACCS head coach Melanie Hall said her team’s cohesiveness allowed her players to get a big enough lead that the backups got to see some action.

“I felt the girls came out and did a great job of playing team ball,” Hall said. “The unity they displayed on the court was terrific. Of course, I want to give all the glory to God for tonight.”

Hall was especially pleased that all of her backups got significant playing time, which enabled each of them to score at least two points.

“Everyone got into the scoring column, which is huge,” Hall said. “I’m so thankful for that, because that’s where we are now as a team.

“Our girls come to practice every day and push each other so hard. It’s wonderful when all of the girls are able to contribute like they did tonight. It shows that all of their hard work and effort has paid off.”

Knowing when to be and where to be is what allowed her players to be so successful on defense, Hall said.

“This wasn’t true the entire game, because there were still times we should have been sharper in certain areas, but for the most part, we put ourselves in very good defensive positions tonight,” Hall said.

On offense, Rachel Holloway and Taylor Welch, both of whom scored 12 points, led the Lady Rebels. Center Marlee Wadsworth added 11 points.

“We executed beautifully on offense tonight,” Hall said. “Holloway and Welch did a good job, but they would tell you it was a total team effort. Whether it was getting some good looks from putbacks, another player setting a good screen or someone having an assist, everyone contributed on offense.”

With this win, the Lady Rebels (22-8) will turn their attention to the tournament semifinals. ACCS will play Friday at 1 p.m. against Bowling Green.
