Game 1 of AC-Prep up in air after Tuesday rainout

NATCHEZ &045; Things are really starting to drag on.

The rain wiped out the continuation of the MPSA Class AAA state championship Game 1 between Adams Christian and Jackson Prep on Tuesday, and now the status of the continuation is up in the air.

The game will be played Thursday, but the site is yet to be determined. Jackson Prep officials are trying to avoid a fourth road trip in two weeks and have petitioned the MPSA to have the game played either in Jackson or at a neutral site, while Adams Christian officials are lobbying to keep the game at home.

The matter was sent to the baseball committee, and it should make a decision this morning.

&uot;Everybody can’t be reached tonight,&uot; Adams head coach Gill Morris said. &uot;Nobody has come out and said, ‘It’s going to be played at Adams.’ I’m sure they’re going to consider the travel that Prep has made. There’s going to be a lot of input from people who are not even associated with triple-A.&uot;

The site was the topic of discussion after game officials declared a rainout when showers hit hard before the 4:30 start on Tuesday. Both teams were scheduled to play at least an inning with the game heading into the top of the sixth.

But Prep officials voiced concern over making at least another trip to Natchez. The Patriots got as far as Brookhaven when Game 1 was rained out May 11 and returned Thursday when the two teams played to the 3-3 tie when a thunderstorm hit.

The committee could recommend playing the game at a neutral site.

If that’s the case, &uot;I’d like to see the game played at Co-Lin,&uot; Morris said. &uot;But at the same time the umpires are coming from Greenville or Laurel. There’s not anything I can tell you.&uot;

The Rebels want to keep the game at home since Game 2 and the if-necessary Game 3 will be played at Jackson Prep. The rules call for the first game to be at the lower seed, and the remainder of the series will be at the higher seed.

The remainder will be played Tuesday at Jackson Prep.

&uot;That’s the reason it’s drawn up like that &045; the lower seed gets the first game to get their share of the gate being in the playoffs. It’s a shame we didn’t get to finish, and it’s more of a shame it’s been a week and we still haven’t played it. But that’s Mother Nature, and there’s not a thing you can do about it.&uot;

The committee is comprised of baseball coaches in the MPSA regardless of class. Central Private head coach Kyle Achord is on the committee along with Jackson Academy head coach Trey Pace.
