HAZLEHURST &045; Natchez 12-year-old All-Stars head Reagan White has actually seen it one other time.
Not in Dixie Youth, mind you. It was back when LSU made the most of the longball in their gorilla-ball era by smashing solo homer after solo homer. The Natchez All-Stars put on a similar show Wednesday in a 20-4 pounding of the Brookhaven Nationals in five innings to claim the District 5 North Sub-district tournament title.
Natchez pounded out six home runs &045; five as part of a nine-run fourth inning &045; to claim the title and advance to the district championship series against McComb starting Friday in Natchez.
&uot;This is the team I thought where hitting was one of our strengths, and it finally showed tonight,&uot; White said. &uot;They went up there relaxed and showed what they can do with the bats. The only other time I’ve seen that was when LSU did it. I’ve never seen it in Dixie Youth, and I don’t think many people have.&uot;
The Natchez All-Stars had a homer in the third inning to help overcome a 3-2 Brookhaven lead. Aaron White launched a three-run homer in to pace the five-run inning, but it was the fifth when the bottom fell out.
Caleb Johnson hit a two-run homer before Brookhaven got the first out, and the rest of the damage went like this &045; Cole Mann solo homer, Hunter Russ solo homer, Audie Crosby solo homer and Cody Floyd solo homer.
It was a streak of five out of six straight batters leaving the yard.
&uot;Their experience showed tonight,&uot; White said. &uot;If it carries over to Friday, we’ll be in good shape. But McComb is a tough test. They’re going to be a challenge.&uot;
Natchez scored two in the first off Brookhaven starter Kyle Henderson when Johnson doubled in Kent King and R.J. Fleming, but Brookhaven scored three in the bottom half off Aaron White.
Brookhaven got another run in the second off White before he was pulled for R.J. Fleming, who went the rest of the way to get the win. Natchez got the five runs in the third and four in the fourth to take a 11-4 lead.
In the fourth Bryce Murray doubled in Floyd to set up Aaron White’s three-run homer.
Fleming came in with bases loaded in second with one out and got two strikeouts to end the inning.
&uot;He kept the ball low, made them hit grounders and the defense was there to back him up,&uot; Reagan White said. &uot;That was the key.&uot;
