Down 7-0, Vidalia Minors rally for win

VIDALIA, La. &045; According to the coaches of the Vidalia Minor All-Stars, as Jake Winston goes so does the team.

So with Winston having a poor outing on the mound as the starting pitcher, it should come of no surprise that Vidalia found itself trailing 7-0 going into the last inning.

But, lo and behold, it was Winston who changed the complexion of the game and started a furious rally with a three-run double that helped Vidalia come from behind and score eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a dramatic 8-7 win over Catahoula in the opening round of the Minor League District 6 sub-district tournament Friday night.

&uot;The coaches on this team think the team feeds off Jake, and I do too,&uot; coach Tam Winston said. &uot;He just got down and didn’t have his best stuff on the mound today, but we’re proud to see him come through.&uot;

It all came on the heels of Catahoula opening up a 7-0 lead, which Tam Winston said he was surprised the see the lackadaisical play in the field from his team, saying his squad &uot;came out with no fire.&uot;

&uot;They’re a tough bunch, but I think they played with no emotion,&uot; he said. &uot;I’ve never seen them do that before.&uot;

But it appeared Vidalia awoke in time to pull off a comeback of paramount proportions.

After Williams was hit by a pitch, Garrison doubled and Tucker Bruce was walked to load the bases it was time for the younger Winston to redeem himself. And that he did.

Winston rocked a pitch by Catahoula’s Richard Jefferson to right-center for a base-clearing double to narrow the lead to 7-3.

Matt Souderes kept the action going at scored Winston with a single. However, Souderes was then thrown out at third after a wild pitch for the first out.

That didn’t seem to dampen the rally, though. After Jamala Davis singled he was then brought home by Devin Barnes double to left center to continue the comeback at 7-5.

Then things just kept getting better for Vidalia. Jefferson was pulled in favor of Derrick Herrington and what ensued is what makes the game so fun.

Allan Smith sailed a two-run homer over the left field wall to send the Vidalia dugout into a frenzy as Smith tied the game at 7-7.

With still only one out and the bases loaded the stage was set for Bruce. He sailed a high fly ball to center field, but with Lady Luck on Vidalia’s side, Catahoula’s JaMario Bowman botched the routine fly ball and Brandon Warshaw coasted across home plate for the winning run.

Afterward, the elder Winston said he was team got back to the basics its capable of.

&uot;We were able to get lots of hits, and really, we just were able to put the bat on the ball,&uot; Winston said.

Catahoula took an early 3-0 lead in the second thanks in part to an error and a wild pitch that allowed two runs to score.

The score remained the same until the fourth after Catahoula tacked on four more runs to stretch the lead to 7-0.

Jake Winston had retired the first two batters he faced, but he appeared shaken with a sore right arm. What ensued thereafter were a hit batter, three straight errors, a single and a passed ball.

Dee Garrison then took the mound after that and stuck out Ty Bell to end the inning. Garrison would stay on the mound until the sixth until Williams replaced him for the remainder. With both pitchers throwing well and not allowing any runs it appeared the tide began to slowly turn.

Ferriday 13, South Franklin 3, five innings

The Ferriday All-Stars held an 8-3 lead in the fourth before tacking on five in the fifth to end the game early.

Going into the bottom of the fourth inning Ferriday was leading 8-3 thanks in part to poor fielding by South Franklin.

Ferriday jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.
