Students, drivers: Be aware of bus safety

As parents, teachers and students prepare for the new school year, we all need to remember that school buses will be rolling again as of Thursday, the first day of classes.
We remind motorists that they must be careful as children are loading and unloading the buses, and they need to be mindful of the buses while they are on the road.
But students also need to pay attention to bus safety. Durham School Services, which contracts with the Natchez-Adams School District for bus service, offers these tips, following the letters for &uot;pride&uot;:
4Pay attention to the Danger Zone. The Danger Zone is anywhere within 10 feet of the school bus. It is very important children stay out of the Danger Zone because it is very difficult for the driver to see what is in this area.
4Respect each other. Please be courteous and cooperate with the driver. Just as there are consequences for negative behavior at school, the same applies on the bus. We don’t ever want to take away riding privileges, however, if a student does not follow this rule and is endangering others, he or she will not be allowed to ride.
4Inside the bus, stay seated. If you stand when the bus is moving, you can lose your balance and get hurt if you fall.
4Don’t run. Don’t ever run to catch the school bus. This puts you in the bus’ Danger Zone. Also, if you leave something on the bus or drop something under the bus, tell the driver! Don’t ever try to reach under the bus.
4Exit and move out of the Danger Zone. As soon as you get off the bus, move at least 10 giant steps away before walking in any direction. Also, don’t ever walk behind the bus.
That’s good advice from the experts, and we hope parents will remind their children to be careful.
