GONZALES, La. &045; This time when things got tough, the Vidalia Minor League All-Stars didn’t need heroics in their last at-bat.

They answered as quickly as possible.

It was a four-run first inning that perhaps set the tone for the contest as it answered Morgan City’s three-run top half of the first and buoyed the All-Stars to a 13-8 win at the South regional tournament.

The All-Stars got a copmplete game from Jake Winston on the mound and &045; more importantly &045; a chance to play another day. They will face the loser of the Gonzales-Shreveport Americans game at 5 p.m. today.

&uot;I don’t know what’s wrong with them &045; it’s like they were playing scared,&uot; Vidalia head coach Tam Winston said. &uot;We started at 2:30, and Jake couldn’t get any rhythm. I’ve never seen Jake walk in a run, and he walked in one. I’m excited we get to play another day. You’ve got to win one game a day.&uot;

The four-run first got things going really well as Winston led off with a triple and scored on a Dee Garrison groundout. Devin Barnes singled, Cory Williams walked and Allen Smith put one to the fence that scored both to tie it up.

It stayed tight until the fifth inning when Vidalia broke out of a 9-8 ball game to score four runs and put the game away. Jake Winston doubled and moved to third when Garrison and Barnes each walked to load the bases.

Williams walked to score Winston, Jamal Davis walked to score Garrison. Brandon Warshaw then doubled in Barnes and Williams for the 13-8 lead.

&uot;When we came in and got those four runs, we came and got a little ice and were hitting a stride and they were going the other way,&uot; Tam Winston said.&160;&uot;The heat was unbearable. It’s tough on these kids. The humidity is just so bad.&uot;

Winston then settled on the mound and retired the side in order in the final two innings, something he didn’t do in the first three. Morgan City scored two in the second and two more in the third, taking a 5-4 lead and another 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the third.

Winston got five of his last six outs on strikeouts, didn’t walk any after the third inning and finished the game with just two hits allowed. He finished the game with 13 strikeouts.
