Jones finishes solid to claim Beau Pré title

NATCHEZ &045; Lee Jones is just trying to get back in the groove.

If Saturday’s 7-under par on the first day of the Beau Pr Club Championship was any indication he’s back swinging well, then Sunday was the clincher. The senior at Trinity Episcopal wasn’t anything close to his Day 1 score, but he stayed steady to shoot a 2-over to win the tournament.

The championship is his first since claiming the Bill McKenney Memorial City Championship back in 2002.

&uot;Yesterday was a good day,&uot; said Jones, who finished four shots ahead of P.Z. Brewer on the leaderboard. &uot;I was really, really happy with everything. It feels good to win another tournament, too. I’ve been playing all summer and practicing, and finally I started swinging a little better.

&uot;I played every day this summer that I could. I just didn’t play as good as I used to. I took a long break and just got back started, but I’m very, very happy.&uot;

The young standout didn’t fare as well as Saturday, about as near-perfect as you can get with seven birdies and no bogeys. Things started almost the same on Sunday before Jones got derailed a bit with a triple bogey on No. 8.

Brewer, whose 72 on Sunday was the best among the eight-man championship flight, cut into the lead on that hole with a birdie. After that, however, Brewer bogeyed on the No. 9 and couldn’t seize the momentum.

&uot;I played solid all day, but I just had so much room to make up,&uot; Brewer said. &uot;After the No. 8 hole, he played solid the rest of the way. He didn’t make too many birdies, but after that triple he parred everything coming up. That’s all he needed to do &045; make a bunch of pars.&uot;

Jones and Brewer battled it out to the No. 18 along with Dan Bland after Tom Mathews withdrew due to a sore hip. Mathews came into Sunday tied for second with Bland after each shot a 70 on Saturday.

Bland shot a 75 on Sunday to slide into third. Ward Graning finished fourth at 148.

Jones finished with bogeys on 8 and 10 after posting birdies on holes 1 and 3.

&uot;I can’t do that two days in a row,&uot; Jones said. &uot;I started out real well, and about on 7 I kind of had a hiccup. I thought I hit a good shot (on 8), but it didn’t turn out too well. I knew I had to play well coming in because P.Z. is a good player. He makes a lot of pars, and he won’t give you anything.&uot;

Brewer had that birdie on 8 and 13 but had the bogey on 9 and later another one on 13. He shot even par on the remaining holes to finish even par and cut two strokes into the lead on Jones.

&uot;I was proud to get second,&uot; said Brewer, who claimed the city championship back in July. &uot;I knew it would be hard for him to shoot that low a number (again), and I just tried to shoot low numbers. I just didn’t shoot low enough.&uot;
