FERRIDAY &045; Nearly 300 people gathered Tuesday night on Doty Road to remember the life of Fredrick Ron Lollis, who died Monday night after being shot by a sheriff’s deputy.

The crowd, ranging in age from toddlers to seniors, stood at the site of Lollis’ death for a candlelight vigil for about an hour.

Rev. Alex Promise thanked the crowd for coming out and asked them to pull together to stop injustice.

Many in the Doty Road community feel that Lollis was gunned down unnecessarily due to his race. Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Deputy David Hedrick is white, while Lollis and much of the Doty Road neighborhood is black.

Lollis died around 9:30 p.m. Monday after Hedrick responded to the scene based on a harassment call allegedly involving Lollis.

Promise told the crowd to assemble at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mount Olive Baptist Church to address law enforcement officers. &uot;We are coming together to let them know we aren’t going to tolerate it anymore,&uot; Promise said to the crowd, which responded with an amen to nearly every word said. &uot;We are going to start at the local level and take it to the state level if necessary and go all the way to the federal level.&uot;

The Rev. Justin Conner, who is affiliated with the local NAACP chapter, told the crowd they can’t keep quiet about events like this.

&uot;Tears are running down from momma’s eyes tonight,&uot; Conner said. &uot;They were bringing police from everywhere last night to move us back to our houses, but we are not in bondage on Doty Road. Don’t be afraid to walk Doty Road. I ask the people of Ferriday to get together and sign a petition and send it to Washington to get the FBI down here.&uot;

Lollis’ funeral service will be Sunday.

The State Police and the District Attorney’s office are handling the investigation.
