HONOLULU (AP) — The Department of Defense has announced the death of another Hawaii-based Marine in Afghanistan.

The DOD said Thursday that 23-year-old Cpl. Joe L. Wrightsman of Jonesboro, La., died Sunday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province.

Wrightsman joined the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, in 2005, the same year he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He searved as a rifleman and team leader with Kilo Company.

Wrightsman’s unit deployed to Afghanistan in May to conduct counterinsurgency operations partnered with Afghan security forces. He had completed two previous deployments to Iraq.
