Police jury protected public money

We’re often quick to raise a red flag when local government does something wrong.

We’re fast on the draw to fire when we feel that the rights of the people are trod upon.

On Tuesday, however, the people of Concordia Parish saw good government in action.

The Concordia Parish Police Jury announced it reached a settlement with two contractors over some shoddy road construction that, if it had been left alone, would have resulted in the taxpayers getting a raw deal.

Instead of simply showing apathy, the police jury stood up for themselves and the taxpayers they represent and sued over the poor workmanship of the paving work, ultimately settling for a combination of funds and repaired roads.

The settlement deal appears to be the best possible outcome in what could have easily been a no-win situation.

Police jurors could have easily ignored the issue or simply waved the white flag of surrender and shrugged its collective shoulders.

We’re happy the police jury had the guts to not allow the investment of taxpayer money to be squandered.

It’s good to know that the solid stewards of the police jury are tending to the parish’s public money.

That’s a flag worthy of raising — regardless of the color.
