WOODVILLE &045; In a game that was much closer than expected, the Wilkinson County Wildcats actually had to rally in the fourth quarter to take a 22-11 win over the North Pike Jaguars Friday night in the Region 7-3A opener for both teams.

LaKendrick Russ, who scored on a 2-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter for an early 8-0 Wilkinson County lead, scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats (4-0, 1-0) a 16-11 lead after the Jaguars (0-4, 0-1) had taken an 11-7 lead on a short touchdown run and a pair of safeties.

Leroyal Lanus scored on a 1-yard run with just under a minute to go to give the Wildcats the 11-point win.

Surprisingly, the Wildcats had problems moving the ball against what was supposed to be a bad North Pike defense as they had just 195 yards of total offense despite the win.

Amite 20, Jefferson Co. 18

FAYETTE &045; The loss of running back Ernest Havard to an injury last week really hurt the Tigers as they could not hold on to an early lead and their fourth-quarter rally fell a bit short Friday night in the Region 7-3A opener for both teams.

Despite getting a good performance from Jimmie Shorter, who had 101 yards rushing and a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, the Tigers (2-2, 0-1) could not stop the Trojans (1-2, 0-1) in the second quarter as the visitors from Liberty scored 20 unanswered points to take a 20-12 halftime lead.

Issac Wallace threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Chambliss late in the third quarter and the Tigers had a chance to win in the closing seconds of the game. Wallace threw a pass of over 50 yards to Anthony Williams, who caught the pass but was eventually tackled at the 2-yard line as time expired.

Block 34, Jena 13

JONESVILLE, La. &045; Block running back Johnny Lee ran over, around and through the Jena defense to the tune of 200 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 9 team in Class 1A rolled to an easy win over the Class 3A Giants and got back on the winning track.

Block (2-1) jumped out to a 27-0 lead over Jena before the Giants knew what hit them &045; which was a big helping of Lee and Michael Griffin, who ran for over 100 yards in the game as the Bears amassed nearly 350 yards on the ground.

Northeast 41, Ferriday 0

ZACHARY, La. &045; Despite having over 300 yards of total offense, the visiting Trojans had a case of the turnover bug &045; two interceptions and three fumbles lost &045; and could not stop the host and Class 2A’s No. 2 ranked Trojans’ offense Friday night as they improved to 3-0.

Ferriday (1-2) was shut out for the second time in its first three games this season, something unheard of under head coach James McFarland. The visiting Trojans also hurt itself with well over 100 penalty yards.

Franklin County 48, Wesson 7

WESSON &045; The Cobras were no match for the Bulldogs, the No. 4 team in Class 3A and who remained undefeated with a 4-0 record heading into their Region 7-3A schedule, as Deandre Cameron ran for three touchdowns Friday night.

Franklin County also got some support from its special teams as Jonathan Brooks returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and Dane Hodges made six of seven extra points. The Bulldogs scored in all four quarters.
