It’s not Pocahontas or Geronimo, but the Native American story to be told at the Ferriday branch of the Concordia Parish Library tonight should be just as captivating and probably more factual.
As part of annual Archeology Week, Jim Barnett, director of historic properties for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, will present a slideshow on the Quigualtam chiefdom.
&uot;You don’t really have to know very much on archeology to be interested in what I have to say,&uot; Barnett said. &uot;I’m going to describe a really exciting naval type battle that took place between DeSoto and the Quigualtam chiefdoms.&uot;
A Hernando DeSoto expedition in 1542 ran into the large chiefdom in the Mississippi River delta area. Archeologists have speculated about where the chiefdom may have been located, Barnett will present his beliefs on the matter.
Possibilities for the chiefdom include two Adams County sites, one in Yazoo County and one in Washington County.
Barnett said he expected people of all ages to enjoy the battle story.
After the presentation Barnett and other archeologists from the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will identify possible artifacts brought in by the crowd.
Barnett, who spoke at the library function a few years ago, said people in this area usually find quite a few artifacts.
&uot;There are lots of archeological sites in the Miss-Lou area,&uot; Barnett said.
&uot;It’s always fun to see what people have and what they bring in.&uot;
The Ferriday Library has archeology books on display all this week.
The presentation starts at 6 p.m. in the program room. It will last almost an hour.
The program is called &uot;The Mysterious Province of the Quigualtam: The Natchez Indians and DeSoto.&uot;
