NATCHEZ — Students and parents who know what it’s like, and especially those who don’t, can learn about the cause and effects of bullying at 10 a.m. Saturday at Natchez High School.
The Peer Pressure and Bullying Youth Summit, hosted by Alcorn State University Extension Program and Natchez-Adams School District, won’t simply focus on children getting picked on for wearing funny clothes; it will address serious issues.
Among the topics discussed will be bullying, healthy relationships, gang-related violence and consequences of bullying, self-esteem, peer pressure and psychological issues of peer pressure.
The theme of the summit is “Resisting risky behaviors.”
Brenda Robinson, the youth summit chair and Alcorn’s Adams County Extension Center 4-H youth development area educator, said research indicates that nearly one out of every three students, between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school.
“To become responsible, productive and contributing individuals of society, our youth must be knowledgeable of and less engaging in risky behaviors that are detrimental to their social and educational development,” Robinson said.
For more details on the summit, contact Robinson at 601-445-7959 or bmrobin@alcorn.edu.
Doors will open at 9 a.m. This event is free and open to the general public.
