NATCHEZ &045; Oak Grove broke away from a 9-6 lead in the first quarter to land a 53-12 win over Natchez High Friday night at Tom F. Williams Stadium.
The Bulldogs fell behind 9-0 before punching in their first score when Riley Trask ran it in from 7 yards out to cut the lead to 9-6. From there the Warriors clicked offensively and gave the Bulldogs problems on the defensive end.
&uot;They mixed it up,&uot; Natchez High head coach Lance Reed said. &uot;They were pretty balanced in what they did. We had some breakdowns in what we did, and they popped some big plays on us. They executed fairly well. I don’t want to say we had a little letdown, but they ran their offense.&uot;
The Warriors poured it on and eventually opened up to a 42-6 lead at halftime. They got two more touchdowns before Natchez scored near the end of the game when Trask scored from 1-yard out.
The Bulldogs struggled moving the ball but were able to avoid turnovers early in the game. Oak Grove blocked a punt and just took away things the Bulldogs were trying to do offensively, namely the passing game.
&uot;They played coverage on us, and they sent six every so often,&uot; Reed said. &uot;They did blitz in certain situations. They took away the run from us, and we weren’t able to run it like we wanted.
&uot;To be successful out of this offense, we have to be able to run the ball. Times come when we aren’t able to run the ball when we want to, and we have to throw it. We have to set up the pass with our run a little better.&uot;
