BUNKIE, La. — As expected, the Vidalia Vikings had another double-digit win over an inferior opponent in District 3-3A as they handily defeated the Bunkie Panthers Friday night.
But for a change, Vidalia didn’t flirt with the 100-point mark that has been the case for the Vikings in their blowout wins in district play this season. Instead, Vidalia won by a score of 63-42 to finish a perfect 12-0 in its district.
For part of the first half the game was close and that was something head coach Robert Sanders had been hoping would happen as the playoffs approached. Vidalia, ranked No. 2 in all of Class 3A, led Bunkie just 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and doubled its lead to 14 points by halftime.
In the third quarter, the Vikings turned up their defensive intensity and forced several turnovers that led to easy transition baskets. Vidalia outscored the Panthers 22-10 to take a 54-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Vidalia had four players score in double figures. Torrey Dixon finished with a game-high 17 points, Gary Stewart had 12 points, Eric Bell added 11 points and D.J. Polk ended up with 10 points. Bunkie was led by Dequartris McGlory with 16 points.
The 27-4 Vikings will likely get a high seed when the brackets for the Class 3A playoffs come out on Sunday.
