Franklin County advances in South State tourney

MEADVILLE — The Franklin County Lady Bulldogs started a little slow, but eventually wore down the Southeast Lauderdale Lady Tigers in a 74-49 victory in the quarterfinals of the MHSAA Class 3A South State tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs, who are hosting the tournament, will take on Heidelberg in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. today.
Heidelberg defeated Carthage 47-38 in its quarterfinal game Friday.
Franklin County led Southeast Lauderdale 34-23 at halftime, but the Lady Tigers trimmed the deficit to 49-41 at the end of the third quarter.
However, Franklin County overpowered the Lady Tigers in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 25-8 to turn the game into a blowout.
“We just wore them down,” Franklin County head coach Charles Moore said.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Ventrice Briggs, who scored 33 points in the victory.
Cee Cee Miller added 16 points for Franklin County while Erica Jenkins scored nine and Kierra Collins chipped in seven.
Southeast Lauderdale was led by Rachel Adams with 24 points.
Franklin County improved its record on the season to 22-3.
