NATCHEZ &045; Boys and Girls Club volunteer Margaret Weed managed to answer every question about her national award by praising the other workers at the organization.
And it’s exactly that spirit that Club Executive Director Fay Minor said earned Weed the National Boys & Girls Club Medallion.
&uot;She starts pulling out the checkbook when she walks in the club,&uot; Minor said. &uot;Whatever we need, whether it is big or small, she’s willing to do it.&uot;
Weed serves on the club board of directors, attends out of town meetings, does fundraising work and volunteers at the clubs.
Minor said a national representative from the Club noticed Weed’s hard work and recommended nominating her for the award.
The National Medallion is awarded by the National Awards Committee to any board member or volunteer who has shown unusually devoted service to the club over a long period of time.
&uot;I’m just thrilled,&uot; Weed said. &uot;It’s a great honor for our board. Fay and Matilda (Stephens, director of operations) have worked so hard and it has been so much fun to work with them.&uot;
Weed said she’s always had a love for children and has worked with a variety of children’s organizations including being a foster parent.
&uot;We are all responsible for the children on this planet,&uot; she said. &uot;Every child has the right to wake up in the morning and know they are safe and loved and know some wonderful, exciting adventure is going to happen to them that day.&uot;
Weed has worked along with Minor and Stephens to start up two new clubs in Adams County at McLaurin and Morgantown Elementary schools.
&uot;It’s impossible for one person on the board to take credit for something like that (the medallion),&uot; Weed said. &uot;It’s a magnificent board and an incredible staff. I just completely share this award with the whole board.&uot;
Weed contributed the community of Natchez with much of the success of the local Club saying local businesses made it easy to call and ask for donations.
Weed will receive the medallion at the annual Steak and Steak dinner on Dec. 9 at Jefferson Street Methodist Church.
