Bulldogs in state semis tonight

MEADVILLE &045; For the Franklin County Bulldogs, nothing has changed.
They still practice the same way, working on the fundamentals and trying to make sure plays are executed perfectly.
&uot;There’s nothing different,&uot; Franklin County head coach Anthony Hart said. &uot;We’re just doing what we always do.&uot;
And the Bulldogs always look to Jasper O’Quinn.
So when the Bulldogs face West Lauderdale at 7 tonight in Meadville for a spot in the Class 3A state championship game, look for the senior quarterback to be in the middle of things, making plays, just like he usually does.
Friday against Tylertown, O’Quinn made a two-point conversion to send the game to overtime, then scored the winning touchdown. This week he’ll be called upon to make a similar effort against West Lauderdale.
&uot;It’s the same thing as last week,&uot; O’Quinn said. &uot;The game plan doesn’t change.&uot;
Moved from running back to quarterback this season, O’Quinn has made a fine transition. In the Bulldogs’ system, he isn’t called upon to throw much, instead running the ball on most plays. His running back training still serves him well in that capacity.
In fall drills, the coaching staff approached O’Quinn about making the move, and the senior was eager to do it.
&uot;I just came in and went wherever the coaches needed me, whatever would help the team,&uot; O’Quinn said.
The toughest thing about moving to quarterback was the mental preparation.
&uot;At running back, I just took the ball and followed my blocks,&uot; O’Quinn said. &uot;Now I have to make reads and decide where the play should go.&uot;
He’s also stepped into a greater leadership role on the team and become more vocal, a necessity at his new position.
Against West Lauderdale, the Bulldogs will again have their hands full. West Lauderdale took out Hazlehurst 9-8 Friday in a defensive battle. Hazlehurst is the only team that beat Franklin County this season, though the game was played at Hazlehurst on a rain-soaked field.
&uot;They’re very balanced. They’re good in all phases of the game,&uot; Hart said. &uot;They’re probably not as talented as some of the teams we’ve faced already, but they’re haven’t lost a game in a long time.&uot;
