NATCHEZ — The lineup for this weekend’s events ranges from celebrations of the earth and marriage to homage to victims of the Rhythm Night Club fire and domestic violence.

Rhythm Night Club dedication

The Rhythm Night Club museum will dedicate commemorative bricks from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the original site of the fire on St. Catherine Street, museum owner Monroe Sago said.

Monday will also mark the 73rd anniversary of the fire, which claimed the lives of 209 people on April 23, 1940. At least three of the survivors will attend Saturday’s cememony, Sago said.

Sago said the event is important not only in remembering those lost but in commemorating the fire code changes the event inspired that might have prevented similar tragedies.

A scholarship will also be presented at the ceremony to a Natchez High School student who has volunteered at the museum and spent many hours researching the fire for school reports.

Commemorative bricks are $30 for a brick with three lines of text and $60 for a brick with five lines of text. Sago said there are no stipulations as to what can be written on the brick.

Anyone wishing to purchase a brick can pick up an order form at the museum at 6 Catherine St., or place an order by calling Sago at 601-597-0557.

Refreshments will be served.

Earth day celebration

A new environment-friendly group that recently planted a seed in Natchez has invited other other green-minded locals to help the group grow Saturday.

The Natchez Chapter of Gaining Ground, a statewide educational group promoting sustainability, recently started up, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Natchez Coffee Company, the group will share their purpose and provide samples of some of the work they do.

Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi offers workshops on how to plant organically, build and energize with earth-friendly materials and find simple ways to improve your health using natural, non-invasive methods.

Mitzi Burkley-Callon, the GGSIM Natchez chapter chairwoman, said Saturday will give interested residents a chance to share ideas with the group and learn more about what they can do at home.

Burkley-Callon said Baton Rouge has the biggest chapter of Gaining Ground, and she hopes Natchez could grow as organized some day.

“We will put people together,” Burkley-Callon said.

Miss-Lou Marriage Walk

Saturday’s marriage walk at 10 a.m. isn’t a political event — it’s a celebration of love, said Shauna Whiting, a member of a marriage ministry committee from New Hope The Vision Center, which organized the walk.

“The purpose (of the walk) is … to let the youth know you can get married, stay committed and stay happy,” Whiting said.

“Marriage does work.”

The walk will begin behind the Grand Hotel on Broadway Street, proceed down Franklin Street to Memorial Park and come back down Main Street to the bluff.
