JONESVILLE, La. &045; At the end of a four-game homestand that actually began on No. 30 and with the Ferriday High Tournament starting Thursday, the Block Lady Bears needed to get back in the win column after a tough loss to Ferriday last Friday night.

Block responded by jumping out to a big lead early and never looked back as three Lady Bears scored in double figures and two others were close as they rolled to a 75-45 win over the Sicily Island Lady Tigers Tuesday night.

The Lady Bears put the game away early by playing solid defense in the first quarter, especially on Rockel Gary, Sicily Island’s leading scorer. That helped them take a 21-5 lead at the end of the quarter.

Wilkinson County won 73-47, running away with the victory after taking a 32-16 halftime lead. Despite the big win, Wilkinson head coach Edwin White said he still sees too many mistakes from his team.

&uot;These games are a learning process for us,&uot; White said. &uot;We’re still making mistakes we shouldn’t be making as a veteran team. We’re not fine-tuning things like we should be.&uot;

The Lady Wildcats had four players in double figures, led by point guard Latasha Williams’ 23. Nakia Stewart had 16, Erica Lewis had 13 and Kimberly Griffin added 11.

Hazlehurst (7-6, 2-0) put the game out of reach by outscoring Jefferson 20-9 in the second quarter for a 29-9 halftime lead. Donnella Shorter led the Lady Tigers (2-11, 0-3) with 10 points.

Bastrop 74, Vidalia 36

VIDALIA, La. &045; Vidalia had a season-high in points this season, but it still didn’t matter as the Lady Rams cruised to their second straight dominating win over the Lady Vikings.

Marceola Robinson led Bastrop with a game-high 22 points and Amelia Witherspoon had 10 points. Chelsea McElwee and Kimberly Yearby led Vidalia with 14 points each.
