NATCHEZ — Kevin Hawkins enjoyed his birthday cake Saturday with one eye on his plate and the other on the remaining cake.
“Don’t eat my John Cena,” 5-year-old Kevin said to his older brother Jalin Martin.
John Cena is Kevin’s favorite professional wrestler.
When The Dart landed on Weir Court in Natchez Kevin was enjoying a family birthday in honor of his fifth birthday.
His mother Deitra Martin cut pieces of the cake for the rest of the family carefully avoiding cutting into the wrestler’s printed face.
“I know we are going to eventually eat it,” she said. “I don’t know how he is going to react.”
While he celebrated on Saturday, his actual birthday is today.
Kevin, dressed in a John Cena shirt and a wrestling belt buckle, celebrated with a family hot dog cookout and a cake decorated with a picture of John Cena.
“I play a wrestling video game with him on it,” Kevin said. “He does this special move that I like.”
The party was hosted by his great-aunt and uncle, Eddie and Jill Martin.
“He’s my sweetie,” Jill said. “We do family birthday parties for all the children. It’s fun to get everyone together.”
Kevin’s mother Deitra Martin said celebrating her son’s fifth birthday is a little bittersweet.
“It seems like just yesterday he was born,” she said. “They grow up so fast.”
Kevin said the favorite parts of his birthday party were the cake, opening presents and playing with the other children.
Among his favorite toys were a cowboy play kit with a gun and holster. He also got a cowboy hat to complete the look.
Kevin said he also liked the skateboard figures and dragon castle.
“He will play with those all the time,” Deitra said. “We got him a smaller castle for Christmas and he loves playing with all his little men in it.”
