JACKSON &045; The last time the Jefferson County Lady Tigers took on the Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats, Kim Griffin lit up Jefferson County for 24 points, one of three Lady Wildcat players to score in double figures in a 66-38 win in a Division 7-3A game on Dec. 17 in Woodville.
This time, however, the result was quite different at the Jackson Public Schools/Pepsi Holiday Classic.
Stacy Thomas scored a game-high 27 points and Jefferson County turned the tables on Griffin, holding her to just two points and took advantage of a big third quarter to pull out a stunning 49-44 win over Wilkinson County, handing the Lady Wildcats their first two-game losing streak of the season.
Unlike the first meeting of the season between the two teams, which Wilkinson County led by 23 points at halftime, this game was not over before both teams went into their respective locker rooms as Jefferson County trailed by just nine, 29-20.
The Lady Tigers (3-13) then took over in the third quarter thanks to Thomas’s shooting and a tenacious defense that put the clamps not only on Griffin but also Latasha Williams and Nakia Stewart.
Jefferson County outscored the Lady Wildcats (10-5) 18-6 in the third quarter to take a 38-35 lead into the fourth quarter. Williams led the Lady Tigers with 14 points, but Stewart was held to just eight points. Donnella Shorter was also a big factor in the Lady Tigers’ win with 10 points.
Vidalia 51, Davidson 43
VIDALIA &045; Through 13 losses, the Lady Vikings knew it would happen sooner or later. Tuesday night, Vidalia (1-13) got its first victory of the season, a win over Davidson.
&uot;We knew we had a shot at beating them coming into this game,&uot; Vidalia head coach Damus Smith said. &uot;Like us, they don’t have a lot of numbers.&uot;
For the first 26 minutes, neither team could take a significant lead. Davidson was ahead 22-21 at the half, but the lead went back and forth until early in the fourth quarter, when The Lady Vikings started pouring it in.
Vidalia went on an 13-3 run to make the score 46-36 with less than two minutes remaining, all but ensuring the Lady Vikings of their first win.
From there, it was simply a matter of holding on for the victory.
&uot;They didn’t play up to their potential,&uot; Davidson head coach Sonya Singleton said. &uot;That’s all I’m upset about.&uot;
Tensas Academy 54, Riverfield 42
BASTROP, La. &045; The Lady Chiefs (8-6) didn’t waste any time up against a tough Riverfield squad, and they knew they really couldn’t.
So they came with the press early and often, putting pressure on the perimeter and settling into a zone defense in the halfcourt to stop post player Anna Crawford. By the end of the first half Tensas was well out in front 26-9, and the lead never got close.
&uot;We just played real good defense in the first half,&uot; Tensas head coach Chuck Bauerle said. &uot;We scored a little, too, but we pretty much put them out. Crawford is a big girl, and she pretty much had her way the whole ball game. The rest of them, we kind of shut them down.&uot;
The Lady Chiefs used that lead to post a 38-18 lead at halftime over Riverfield (13-5), but the Lady Raiders trimmed the lead some in the third quarter with a 13-9 edge for a 47-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Huntington 41, Central Holmes 33
LEXINGTON &045; The Lady Hounds outscored the Lady Trojans 13-6 in each of the first two quarters to take a 14-point halftime lead en route to an eight-point win Tuesday afternoon at the Central Holmes Tournament.
What was unusual about this game was that the top four scorers for each team had nine, eight, seven and six points each. Erin Hedrick led Huntington (7-7) with nine points. Huntington goes up against Immanuel Christian at 11 a.m. today.
Cathedral 46, Dexter 30
WESSON &045; The Lady Green Wave saw a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter slip away by halftime, but they played their most impressive second half of the season on their way to a 16-point win over the Lady Cobras at the Wesson Tournament and their second win of the season.
With the score tied a 23-23 at the half, Cathedral (2-9) turned got the momentum back that it lost in the second quarter with outstanding defense that helped the Lady Green Wave score 13 points and, more importantly, hold Wesson to just one point. Mattie Smith led Cathedral with 12 points.
Natchez High 57, Oak Grove 54
HATTIESBURG &045; The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-7 lead over the Lady Warriors and then had to on over the final three quarters for the three-point win at the Hattiesburg Holiday Classic.
