VIDALIA, La. &045; A 1-year-old boy died early Monday morning when the mobile home he was in on Dale’s Alley caught fire.
The Vidalia Fire Department is investigating the cause of the 12:15 a.m. fire.
A 3-year-old female was rescued from the home by VFD and was unconscious at first but was later breathing on her own and waking up, Fire Chief Jack Langston said. She was taken to a Jackson hospital.
Langston said the fire was contained to a bedroom area where the boy was found, but the rest of the home suffered some smoke damage.
The children’s parents were outside the home in the yard when the fire occurred, Langston said.
Langston would not release the names of the children.
The coroner is performing an autopsy on the boy.
Neighbor Donna Robertson, who lives across the street, said Tyrone Davis lived in the house with Tamekia Turner and the children.
&uot;I heard a big boom like a transformer blew,&uot; Robertson said. &uot;Then I heard sirens and within five minutes I looked out the window and saw flames up to the limbs of the trees.
&uot;When I came outside they (the parents) were trying to get in through the door to get the kids.&uot;
Robertson said the family was staying with Davis’ mother and that the 3-year-old, Angela, was doing fine.
Though no cause has been determined in the fire, Langston warned against the use of electric heaters.
&uot;The Vidalia Fire Department urges all people in Vidalia and the whole area to please be safe with these electric heaters and the cheap, cheap extension cords,&uot; Langston said. &uot;Even if they are UL approved, don’t use them. They are not built to use on electric heaters.&uot;
