LAUREN WOOD / THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — Trinity Episcopal Day School’s Sky Logan, center, is welcomed by teammates as he steps on home plate to complete his home run during Friday’s game against Columbia Academy at the former Huntington baseball field in Ferriday.

NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal had a bit of a scare Friday night in its final regular-season game against Columbia Academy.

During the Saints’ 8-6 win, left-handed reliever Quinton Logan had a comebacker hit him in his left arm during the top of the sixth inning, forcing head coach Mitch Ashmore to pull Logan for precautionary reasons.

Daniel Dunaway would finish things off for Trinity, getting the final four outs. Saints assistant coach Richy Spears said he expects Logan to be available this week when the Saints take on Centreville Academy in the first round of the MAIS Class AA playoffs.

“I don’t think (his arm) was broken or anything,” Spears said. “I think he’ll be fine. He’s moving around a lot better and holding it a lot different than he did (during the game), so I think he’s going to be fine.”

Spears also said he expects Logan to pitch at some point against the Tigers.

“I hope so, because more than likely we’re going to need him,” Spears said.

Centreville assistant coach Mark Mann said the Saints are a very competitive team, and he expects the series to feature lots of good pitching.

“It’s just going to be a great matchup,” Mann said. “Both teams play hard, and either team can get on a good hitting streak at any time, but pitching has been their key and our key so far this season.”

When looking at Centreville, Spears said he expects to see the Saints face a good fundamental ball club.

“They’re going to be a very good ball club,” Spears said. “They won it last year, so they know what it takes to win it.”

Spears said his team also has experience, winning the state title in Class A last season, but the Saints lost four players from that team due to graduation, while Centreville returns all of its starters from last year’s squad.

“I think we’ve come together the past couple of weeks, doing some things that we weren’t doing earlier, so we’ll just roll it out there and see what happens,” Spears said.

Tuesday’s matchup will feature Southern Miss signee Jake Winston starting for Trinity and LSU signee Hunter Devall starting for Centreville, something Mann said he’s excited about.

“If anyone likes baseball — I don’t care what level — this is going to be one of the biggest pitching matchups in our area in a long time,” Mann said.

“It’s probably going to be low-scoring, and whichever team makes the least amount of mistakes will probably win. Both are dominant pitchers.”

Cathedral High School

After securing a regional title with a 6-3 win against rival St. Aloysius Friday, Cathedral followed it up with a 2-0 win against Porter’s Chapel Academy Saturday.

With a first-round bye in the MHSAA Class 1A playoffs, Cathedral will play three games this week before facing a nine-game layoff before its first postseason series.

The Green Wave are scheduled to travel to Franklin County High School Tuesday before facing Natchez High School Wednesday at Chester Willis Field. Cathedral will also host Franklin County Thursday.

“The way we’re playing right now, I’d like to keep playing,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “We’re playing pretty good baseball right now, and if we can keep it up and go through next week and take a few days off and get ready for the playoffs, we’ll be fine.”
