MPSA: Lady Rebels get by Silliman; Rams win

NATCHEZ &045; This was the last thing a team with on a serious roll wanted to see.

And it caught the Adams Christian Lady Rebels a bit by surprise. Silliman started off the game in a stall and tried to milk as much clock as possible, and it made the Lady Rebels feel as if they were trying to start a car in third gear.

But the second half was more to their liking, and the Lady Rebels claimed a 47-31 win over the Lady Wildcats to advance to the semifinals of the Class AA South State tournament.

Adams will play Trinity at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday.

&uot;It took us totally out of our whole entire game plan,&uot; Adams head coach John R. Gray said. &uot;I need to congratulate that coach. They did a good job of disrupting our whole entire game plan. We never got comfortable until very late in the third quarter.&uot;

The Lady Wildcats kept the pace slow and even tried to keep it slow in the second half despite trailing on the scoreboard. Silliman didn’t shoot until Jamie Brian’s bucket with 3:25 left in the first, and the Lady Rebels had a modest 17-10 lead at halftime.

That’s when the shots finally started to fall. Laura Guedon hit a bucket to open the half, and Ariana DeLaSalle capped off the run with a bucket for a 25-16 lead with 2:49 left in the third.

&uot;Our coach told us he knew it was going to happen, but he didn’t warn us about it,&uot; Adams guard Katie Ann Swinny said. &uot;He said he knew it would happen. We were not doing too much, but in the second half we stepped it up and got it into the post. Their post was weak. They didn’t have any big girls at all.&uot;

Silliman kept answering with 3-pointers &045; the Lady Wildcats had three in the third quarter &045; but Joy Wynn answered a 3-pointer from Jess McKowen with a bucket with 15 seconds left for a little boost heading into the fourth quarter with a 30-21 lead.

Nikki Emanuel got a pass from Swinny and put one in off the glass to start the fourth. Silliman answered with two buckets from Kaitlin Palermo to trim the lead to 32-25, but Wynn came through with another bucket to squash the momentum.

&uot;We had to come out in a half-court trap (on defense) and make them go to the goal with the ball,&uot; Gray said. &uot;We were lucky enough to get the lead, and it took them out of their game plan, which was a good plan. Joy really hit some big buckets tonight. It seemed like all our little outside shooters were having an off night, but Laura Guedon made some good passes into the post.&uot;

Brittany Gamberi led ACCS with 19.

Riverdale boys 71, Tensas 45

FERRIDAY &045; Tensas fell to Riverdale in the opening round of the Class A South State Tournament, ending the Chiefs’ season just short of the state tournament.
