NATCHEZ &045; A lot was on the line for the Cathedral Green Wave Friday night in their Division 7-1A matchup with cellar-dweller Enterprise. And it was Senior Night at the Roy Garcia Gym.
A win and Cathedral locks up the No. 3 seed in next week’s division tournament. A loss and the Green Wave could end up as either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed.
With seniors Clay Pennington, Jeremy Davis and Andrew Ellard playing their last regular-season game, the Green Wave, led by Matthew Hall’s game-high 31 points, played their best half of the season in the first half and everybody on the team played solid in their commanding 80-56 win over the Yellow Jackets.
&uot;Everybody played great tonight,&uot; Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said. &uot;It was a great way to finish off Senior Night.&uot;
Cathedral (10-14 overall) finished at 6-6 in division play and will be the third seed regardless of what happens with Pelahatchie, which hosted division-leading West Lincoln Friday night.
The Green Wave got off to a strong start thanks to different type of defense than the man-to-man defense they have used throughout the season.
&uot;We went to a 1-2-2 zone and a 1-2-2 full-court defense,&uot; Arnold said. &uot;Then we dropped back into our 1-2-2 zone. It caused a lot of turnovers and created some transition buckets.&uot;
Cathedral was also patient on offense as Matt Goss and Alex Middleton had five assists each and Davis had four assists to go with six steals and 12 points. Most of those passes went inside to Hall, who did most of his damage in the first half, in which he had 22 points.
Goss finished with eight points and Middleton had five points. Pennington had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, nine on the defensive end.
The Green Wave took a 22-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and then outscored the Yellow Jackets 24-16 in the second quarter for a 46-26 halftime lead.
Even though Enterprise (0-12, 1-19) stayed close with Cathedral, the 20-point deficit at the half was too big to overcome and even at the end of the third and fourth quarters the Green Wave still outscored the Yellow Jackets.
McCall 68, Ferriday 65 (OT)
FERRIDAY, La. &045; The Dragons slowly and methodically chipped away at the Trojans’ three-point halftime lead, forcing overtime with a 14-12 edge in the fourth quarter and winning the game, and the District 4-1A championship, with an 8-5 advantage in the extra session.
Ferriday (4-2, 21-10) led McCall (6-0, 20-4) 18-15 at the end of the first quarter and maintained its three-point lead at halftime. The Dragons cut the lead to two with a 17-16 edge in the third quarter before eventually forcing overtime.
Keith Williams led McCall with 22 points. Dominique Myles led Ferriday with 19 points.
Lake Providence 47, Vidalia 46 (OT)
VIDALIA, La. &045; The Vikings probably don’t want to see 2.4 seconds on the scoreboard for quite some time. That’s how much time was left when the Panthers tied the game and sent it into overtime and when they made the game-winning shot in overtime.
&uot;We were up two with eight seconds left,&uot; Vikings head coach Robert Sanders said. &uot;They threw a pass to (Dantulle) Gilmore and he out-jumped (Ramon) Harris and made a lay-up. That was with 2.4 seconds left.&uot;
Gilmore led Lake Providence (1-4 in district) with 10 points and Harris led Vidalia (0-5, 9-18) with 11 points.
&uot;We were leading by one with under 10 seconds left (in overtime),&uot; Sanders said. &uot;They took shots and were getting rebounds. They finally got a rebound and Willis Nelon scored in the paint with 2.4 seconds left.&uot;
Wilkinson County 61, North Pike 58
SUMMIT &045; The Jaguars tried their best not to finish the regular season winless in Division 7-3A, but they fell a bit short as time ran out on their fourth-quarter rally after trailing by nine after three quarters.
Wilkinson County (5-7, 13-15) turned a three-point halftime into that nine-point lead thanks to a 14-8 advantage in the third quarter. North Pike (0-12, 5-21) outscored the Wildcats 26-20 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to pull out the win.
Gemall Andrews led the Wildcats with 17 points and Corey Dunbar had 15.
Forest 74, Monterey 61
MONTEREY, La. &045; Forest erased a seven-point lead after one quarter of play by outscoring the Wolves a combined 49-27 over the next two quarters to put the game away and stay in the hunt for second place in District 3-B.
The big quarter for Forest was the third quarter in which it outscored Monterey (0-8, 2-26) 23-9 for a 62-47 lead. Cody Wulfkuhle led Monterey with a game-high 23 points.
